The Evaluation of Students' Mental Images of Cigarette Through Metaphor Analysis

Concepts change into mental images through individuals' experiences. Therefore, mental images can differ from culture to culture. This study aims to analyse students' mental images of cigarette through metaphors. This research uses phenomenology, one of qualitative research designs. The study group was composed of 986 secondary school, high school and university students chosen in purposeful sampling method. The participants were asked to complete the statement "a cigarette is like..... because......" in order that their mental images might be revealed. The data were analyzed through content analysis. In consequence, 886 metaphors, 110 of which were different, were obtained. The metaphors were found to be grouped into 3 different categories.

Let F-q be a finite field containing F-4. Let k >= 2 be an integer. We give a full classification of quadratic forms over F-q(k) of codimension 2 provided that certain three coefficients are from F-4. As an application of this we obtain new results on the classification of maximal and minimal curves over F-q(k) . We also give some nonexistence results on certain systems of equations over F-q(k). Oscillation criteria are established for p(x)-Laplacian elliptic inequalities with mixed variable nonlinearities of the form u[del.(A(x)vertical bar del u vertical bar(p(x)-2) del u) + < b(x), vertical bar del u vertical bar(p(x)-2)del u > - h(x, u) + g(x, u)] <= 0, x is an element of Omega, where beta(x) > p(x) > gamma(x) > 1, Omega is an exterior domain in R-N , and h(x, u) = ln vertical bar u vertical bar vertical bar del u vertical bar(p(x)-2) (A(x) del u). del p(x), g(x, u) = c(x) vertical bar u vertical bar(p(x)-2) u + c(1)(x) vertical bar u vertical bar(beta(x)-2) u + c(2)(x) vertical bar u vertical bar(gamma(x)-2)u + f(x). The function h(x, u) recently introduced in [N. Yoshida, Nonlinear Anal. 74 (2011) 2563-2575] allows employing the Riccati transformation technique commonly used in the oscillation theory of ordinary differential equations. It should be noted that the results obtained are new for one dimensional case as well. Examples are given to illustrate the results.
