Abstract
This descriptive research was made with the purpose of investigating the obesity on children between the ages of 7-14 and from different socio-economic levels. The samples of the research was the students who are between the ages of 7-14 and are between second and eight level of primary education, resident in the borders of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality from three different socioeconomic level identified as low-medium-high. The research was conducted by two phases. The body weights and body lengths of children were measured and their Body Mass Indexes (BMI) was calculated. After that considering their ages and sexuality the growing the curves developed by Neyzi at all was used. BMI dependent of age which is above 95% was treated as obese. A survey was conducted with the question content of demography such as age, sex, educational status of parents, level of income. Besides the questions regarding the style of nutrition, frequency of fast food consumption, level of physical activity and time consumed with computer were also included. During the examination of the collected data Mann ? Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance and Square Test were implemented. According to the findings of the research 20.7% of the total students was determined as obese. The obesity ratio of students in high-medium socioeconomic level is higher from the one from low level socioeconomic level. However no significant difference was detected. (p>0.05). Regarding the students determined as obese; between obesity and the factors such as sex, obesity level of parents, socioeconomic level of family, physical activity level, time spent with computer and TV, regular nutrition habit, having breakfast, level of fast food consumption, sugary and fizzy beverage consumption a statistically significant difference was detected. (p<0.05) After the research it is suggested that the body weight management of the obese students needs to be implemented. In order to minimize the risks some training programs within the topics of balances nutrition and importance of sports should be organized within the collaboration of nurses and school administrations. Moreover the body weights and lengths of students should be measured at least twice a year and by using this data an effective monitoring program should be conducted.
