Polikistik Over Sendromu Olan Kadınların Diyet Glisemik Indeksi ve Yükü ile Obezite Arasındaki İlişkinin Belirlenmesi

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in adolescents and reproductive age women. This study was conducted on 65 female premenopausal patients, aged over 18 years who are diagnosed with PCOS and on 65 healthy control women, having similar features. The aim of this study was to compare the nutrition and physical activity habits of the subjects and assess the relationship between dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) and obesity. The questionnaire designed to assess general characteristics, anthropometric measurements, 3-days food and physical activity record was performed face to face to the patients and controls by the investigator. At the end of the study, the variance of groups into body mass index (BMI) was different for group, however most of the women with PCOS were overweight or obese, most of the control groups were underweight or normal weight (p˂0.05). Waist circumference and waist/hip ratio were evaluated according to the women with PCOS compared with women in the control group in terms of obesity-related chronic diseases were found to have a higher risk (p ˂ 0.001). Average GI (PCOS: 59.6 ± 8.0; control 59.7 ± 4.61) was not statistically different between both two groups (p ˃ 0.05). The dietary GL of control group was higher than PCOS group (PCOS: 136.2 ± 52.9; control: 156.4 ± 40.2) (p˂0.05). The relationship between dietary GL and anthropometric measurements were assessed and BMI, waist circumference and waist/hip ratio of females whose GL was lower than 120 was found higher than the females whose GL was 120 or greater in PCOS group (p<0.05). There was no statistical difference between dietary GL and anthropometric measurements in control groups (p ˃ 0.05). In PCOS, obesity, hyperandrogenism, hyperinsulinemia, as well as long-term health problems such as infertility, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and endometrial cancer for the prevention is important that raising the awareness of PCOS women about weight management, adequate and balanced nutrition, proper food choices and exercise habits.
