Abstract
Background/aim: This study aimed to describe the cultural adaptation of the Turkish Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) and to examine the reliability and validity of the scale in older Turkish adults. Materials and methods: Eighty elderly people were recruited for the study. The assessments included the PASE, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Short Physical Performance Battery and Short Form-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36), and the Mini Mental State Test. Outcome measures were conducted twice within a week (test-retest) for reliability. Results: Cronbach's a coefficient was 0.714 for the initial evaluation. The intraclass correlation coefficient for the test-retest reliability was 0.995 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.993-0.997. A high level of positive correlation (0.742, P < 0.001) was found between the total score of PASE and the total scores of IPAQ. There were strong positive correlations between the PASE and the total score of SPPB (0.622, P < 0.001), while an average level of positive correlation with SF-36 was found (0.432, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that the Turkish version of the PASE has powerful measurement qualities, which makes it a reliable and valid scale for the fields of research and practice.
