Abstract
Ozal, N., Evaluation of Factors Affecting Hearing Aid Usage in Children. Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences Audiology Program, Master Thesis, Ankara, 2020. Hearing aids are an essential interventionto access sounds in hearing-impaired children. The correct use of the hearing aid provides support not only for auditory development but also for the development of the language and speech, social, cognitive and academic skills in children, The objectives of the present study are to evaluate the factors affecting the use of hearing aids in children and to raise awareness of the parents about the hearing aid usage. Thirty-two children with bilateral mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss between the ages of three and six and without any additional disability were included in the study. First of all, datalogging of the hearing aid was recorded by connecting to the appropriate hearing aid programming software. Afterwards, 'Maternal Behavior Rating Scale (MBRS) and Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS)' were used to evaluate the parent-child interaction. Then, Hearing Aid Awareness Questionnaire for Parents was completed to evaluate hearing aid use, care and control information for parents. Finally, The Parents’ Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance of Children (PEACH) scale was used to evaluate the auditory performance of children with hearing loss. A statistically significant positive strong correlation was obtained between the Hearing Awareness Question Form scores and CBRS findings, MBRS finding and datalogging findings (p<.05). A statistically strong correlation was found between the silent / noisy environment / total PEACH findings and the MBRS findings, the CBRS findings and the Hearing Aid Awareness Question Form (p <.05). The knowledge of the parents about the hearing aid use and care positively affects hearing aids daily usage time and subjective auditory performance from the view of the parent. It was concluded that there is a linear relationship between the parent-child interaction and the level of knowledge of the parents about hearing aid use and care. Keywords: parent-child interaction, datalogging, hearing aid awareness form, Hearing aid, auditory performance,
