Abstract
Emerging adults experience many changes, and whether they show psychological symptoms is affected by different factors. The current study aimed to explore the mediating role of emerging adults’ (youngsters) perceived parenting styles (emotional warmth, overprotection, and rejection), perceived psychological and behavioral control, their menatalizing capacity, psychological resilience, and childhood trauma between mothers’ perceived parenting styles (emotional warmth, overprotection, and rejection) and emerging adults’ psychological symptoms. This study also aimed to investigate the mediating role of mentalizing capacity and psychological resilience of youngsters, in the relationship between mothers’ mentalization and resilience, and youngsters’ psychological symptoms. Accordingly, 400 college students from İstanbul and their mothers participated in this study. The participants completed demographic information form, My Memories of Upbringing Scale, Mentalization Scale, Resilience Scale for Adults, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Psychological Control Scale – Youth Self Report, The Adolescent Family Process Measure, and Brief Symptom Inventory. The data gathered from mothers and youngsters were analyzed by dyadic mediation analysis. The results showed that, youngsters’ psychological resilience and perceived psychological control mediated the relationship between mothers’ all three perceived parenting styles and youngsters’ psychological symptoms. Besides, youngsters’ mentalization mediated the relationship between mothers’ mentalization and youngsters’ psychological symptoms. Also, youngsters’ psychological resilience mediated the relationship between mothers’ psychological resilience and youngsters’ psychological symptoms. It has been revealed that mothers’ perception of all three parenting styles are transmitted intergenerationally, but, youngsters’ perception of those three parenting styles do not mediate the relationship between mothers’ perception of parenting styles and youngsters’ psychological symptoms. On the other hand, the study showed that mothers’ mentalization and psychological resilience are transferred intergenerationally, and youngsters’ mentalization and resilience mediated the relationship between mothers’ mentalization/ resilience and youngsters’ psychological symptoms. The results were discussed in the light of related literature.
