Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the parenting styles of preschool children and their sensory processing skills. The study included 279 parents with typically developing children aged 3-6 who apply to Hacettepe University Faculty of Health Sciences Occupational Therapy Department and NDN Mutluluk Institution. The sensory profiles of the children were evaluated using the Sensory Profile. Parents' attitude was evaluated with the Parenting Attitude Scale (PAS). The sensory profile of the children was analyzed as sensory processing, modulation, behavioral and emotional responses, and parental attitudes as authoritarian, democratic, overprotective and permissive parental attitudes. The relationships between the children's sensory profile and parenting styles were analyzed using the Spearman test. There was a positive correlation between children's sensory processing skills and authoritarian attitude (p <0.05); There was a statistically significant relationship between modulation skills and democratic attitude in a negative direction (p <0.05), with authoritarian attitude (p <0.001), and a positive relationship with permissive attitude (p = 0.005); It was determined that there was a positive statistically significant relationship (p = 0.001) between behavioral and emotional responses and authoritarian attitude. The Kruskal Wallis test, which is one of the nonparametric methods, was used to examine whether there was a difference between parental attitudes in terms of sensory profile factors. A statistically significant difference was found between parental attitudes in terms of sensory processing variable related to endurance / tonus (p = 0.006), and between parental attitudes in terms of modulation grand total variable (p = 0.027). It is thought that examining both parents' attitudes and behavioral and emotional responses, modulation, and sensory processing skills in preschool period will be important in providing age-appropriate sensory development of these children.
