Abstract
It is commonly accepted that sleeping habits of adolescents has major role in their health and wellbeing. Thus, sleep hygiene behaviors and sleep quality of this group are mostly in low standarts. Purpose of this research is to evaluate the efficiency of sleeping education on high school students who are living in Gudul district of Ankara City. A total of 304 students (46,4% female and 53,6% male students) from two high schools in Gudul are involved in the research. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Sleep Hygiene Index are used in the research. Pre testing was applied to the participants on the 21st of May, 2019. Sleep hygiene education has been given to the students on the 23rd of May, 2019. Students took the final test on the 6th of June, 2019. Non parametric tests were prefferred for the analysis due to abnormal distribution of research data. After the education, Sleep Hygiene Index average scores of students who participated in the education session decreased from 36.0±8.3 to 31.5±6.6 (p<0,05), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index average scores decreased from 8.7±3.4 to 5.0±2.3 (p<0.05). The number of students with good sleep quality increased from 20 (9.3%) to 97 (%51.9). All sub-components of sleep quality, except the need of medication to sleep, are significantly improved (p<0.05). Sleep hygiene education at school has provided statistically significant difference on sleep hygiene and sleep quality according to results of the research. Increasing sleeping quality of adolescents through sleep hygiene education, adding sleeping hygiene classes to school curriculums, building facilities for students to practice physical activities which increase the sleep hygiene and quality positively and education on stress management are recommended.
