Abstract
The aim of this study is to bring forward a conceptial proposal which will be a part of the process of creating a space for functional and user-centered designs with concepts of flexibility and variability in disaster dwellings by considering the diversity of user's life habits. In this context, the aim is to create a model for post disaster houses that will serve for different types of living habits not only deals with production process but also consider the importance of rapid and economic production. Within this context it has been tried to develop a system allowing the users to intervene and shape the space according to their own life styles by adapting and converting it to “their home”. In the first chapter, the terminology is explored, the possibilities and needs for shelter and reconsuction of disaster dwellings that may arise in Turkey have been discussed. The post disaster houses which was designed and built in Turkey and oustside of Turkey are classified. In the second chapter, the importance of flexibility and variability concepts in design is examined. The current projects that are flexible for user changes applied in building sector are examined and design approaches are discussed. In the third chapter, the organization and seperation concepts of the interior space and its elements are explored and the way that the users can develop about the flexibility and variability for the post disaster houses are described. In the fourth chapter, the analysis for suitability, for the user needs, has been made by considering the flexibility and variability concepts of post disaster dwellings produced in Turkey and other countries. With this scope, examples of post disaster dwellings from Turkey and outside of Turkey are examined according to their similarities and differences. In the fifth chapter, a conceptual proposal for post disaster dwellings has been developed due to the assessment of analysis done in the earlier chapters.
