Abstract
This study aims to determine students’ and teachers’ views on the causes and effects of violations of the right to education in secondary-level education. This study was conducted through a descriptive case study, a research method under the qualitative research paradigm. Participants of the study were chosen by using criterion sampling among students and teachers in Ankara state high schools. Semi-structured "Student Interview Form" and "Teacher Interview Form" developed by the researcher were used as data collection tools. The data, obtained via the application of these forms on 25 high school students and 25 high school teachers, 50 participants in total, were analyzed using MAXQDA 2020 program. Research findings show that there are some violations of the right to education in secondary education. The reasons for these rights violations; students' low socioeconomic level and various problems in transportation to school, physical inadequacies at school, inequality between public and private schools, lack of qualified teachers, tools and environments, discrimination, exposure to bullying and being ignored. Violations of the right to education cause sadness and loss of motivation for both students and teachers. Examples of what needs to be done to prevent violations of the right to education are helping students with low socioeconomic status, removing barriers to access to school, eliminating quality deficiencies in schools, preventing discrimination and bullying, and selecting administrators on merit. According to the results of this research, violations of the right to education deepen the inequalities in education.
