The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of communicative approach while teaching idioms in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. To address the purpose of the study, the explanatory sequential design which is one of the mixed methods was adopted. There were fifteen participants in the experimental group four of whom were females while eleven of them were males. On the other hand, the control group was consisted of fourteen students three of whom were females and eleven of them were males. The study was conducted in the spring semester of 2016- 2017 academic year with a total number of twenty nine students. Participants were B1 level students at Atatürk University DILMER and the participants in both groups were selected randomly. Idiom recognition and comprehension test was developed by the researcher as one of the data collection tools. It was applied twice as pre-test and posttest to determine the recognition and comprehension level of students in terms of idioms. Moreover, the data gathered through the pre-test and post-test were analyzed through PASW Statistics 18 program. Idioms in the test were selected from the reading texts of the course book and workbook of Istanbul-Turkish for Foreigners B1 level. Eight lesson plans designed based on communicative approach were carried out to the experimental group; in addition, the reading texts and their activities of Istanbul-Turkish for foreigner B1 level course book and work book were applied to the control group. The study itself took six weeks. Furthermore, semi- structured interview form developed by the researcher as another data collection tool about content and process of courses was applied to fourteen students of the experimental group to support quantitative data. The data obtained from interviews were analyzed descriptively. According to the findings obtained from the study, while there was no statistically meaningful difference between both groups in the beginning of the study, both of the groups exposed different teaching processes made progress. However, the experimental group had higher grades than the control group. Besides, it has been understood that the views of students about lessons based on communicative approach in the process of teaching idioms are seen to be positive and to make the teaching process more amusing and easier. It can be stated specially designed and communicative process of teaching idioms should be carried out Turkish as a foreign language to be more effective.
