Abstract
The Moderating Effect of Ethical Leadership on the Relationship Between Machiavellianism and Unethical Behavior, Ankara, 2017 The purpose of the study is to examine the moderating role of the ethical leadership on the relationship between Machiavellianism and unethical behavior of employees. For this purpose, unethical behavior was measured with five dimensions as abuse resources, theft, corruption, deception and not whistle blowing. In this study, the data were collected from 630 sales representatives working in private sector in Ankara, Bursa and İstanbul through a self-report questionnaire. The corruption dimension was taken out and was not included in the further analyses after factor analysis for the unethical propensity scale. According to the obtained data, there are positive and significant relationships between Machiavellianism and total unethical behavior, abuse resources, theft, deception and not whistle blowing. The hypothesized relationships was tested by using moderation analysis in SPSS. Results revealed that ethical leadership acts as a moderator on the Machiavellianism and deception. Accordingly, the higher levels of ethical leadership decrease the strength of the positive relationship between Machiavellianism and deception behavior. On the other hand, ethical leadership has no moderating effect on the relationship between Machiavellianism and abuse resources, theft, not whistle blowing and unethical behavior. This study has implications for the organizations and executives who aim to prevent unethical behaviors in organizations. Ethical leadership can be used as a remedy to alleviate the adverse effects of unethical behaviors.
