Abstract
One of the most important factors that affect the retention of maxiller complete dentures is the successful posterior palatal seal. The purpose of this study was; to determine the relationship between the anterior and posterior vibration line and the fovea palatina to estimate the location and size of the posterior palatal seal area in the maxiller complete edentulous patients and to evaluate the relationship between the vault form and the posterior palatal seal area by determining the configurations related to the vault form with lateral cephalometric radiographs. For this purpose, following the approval of Hacettepe University Ethics Committee for Non-Interventional Clinical Investigations, the anamnesis of 51 patients was taken and intraoral measurements were made and cephalometric radiographs of each patient were taken and angle measurements were made on the radiographs. IBM SPSS 21.0 package program was used for statistical analysis. Correlation analyzes of all the data obtained were considered to be statistically significant, with values smaller than p value of 0.05. According to the results, there was no correlation between measurements of posterior palatal seal area and angle measurements on cephalometric radiographs. The vault form was found to be associated with posterior palatal seal area width and angle measurements on cephalometric radiographs. Fovea palatini were not found to be an exact anatomic landmark for the posterior border of the maxiller complete dentures.
