Abstract
The use of unnecessary proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is very common in the world and in our country also. This situation increases the risk of many adverse reactions and drug interactions. For this reason, in order to optimize the treatment, it is important to avoid keeping the indications wide and use of inappropriate PPIs. The aims of this study are to prevent the prescribing of inappropriate indications of PPIs with the contribution of the clinical pharmacist and to ensure the discharged patients are well informed about the use of PPIs in Hacettepe University Hospital’s Department of Internal Medicine Inpatient Settings. A total of 122 patients aged 20-95 years, who were prescribed PPIs in one of the Inpatient Services, were included in the study. Thirty-two (26,2%) of these patients were found not to have appropriate indications for the use of PPI, accordingly recommendations were given to physicians to deprescribe PPI, and 65,6% of these recommendations were accepted by them. Forty of 78 patients who were discharged using PPI were given counseling services for their medicines, while 38 patients who constituted the control group were not counseled. All patients’ follow-ups were made by phone call after 1 month, and 100% of the educated patients were found to use PPI correctly (p<0,001). The fact that, with the involvement of the clinical pharmacist in the multidisciplinary team and contributions to the detection of PPIs that are used in inappropriate indications, the removal of them from the prescriptions by the physicians, and prevention of unnecessary PPI use have been achieved. It has also been found that the appropriate use of PPIs is significantly higher in patients who were briefed by clinical pharmacists.
