Terra Sigillata is the name given to ceramic pots with seal decorations made during the Roman period. As time passed, it was identified with the solidified slip on the pots and became known as “Terra Sigillata slip”. Terra sigillata technique, which has become the passion of the pottery masters for centuries, has been developed until today. As the make up and application of the slip and its becoming perfect with forms is a process that requires long effort and patience, the smooth surface and natural glow from clay has become an important legacy of the ceramic masters that they transfer from generation to generation. Terra Sigillata is the most advanced type of slip that has been used on ceramic surfaces since the Neolithic period in Anatolia. The use of clay’s tinting characteristic as a value on the surface creates new possibilities for the ceramic art.
Terra Sigillata has not only been used on ceramic forms in history because of its simplicity, permeability and natural brightness, bu this slip, which had a freat place in Aegean civilizations’in ceramic production, was also used for the ceramic pots for Daily use. On these ceramics, several forms from geometrical patterns to war scenes stand out.
With this work the goal is to combine the passion of master potters 2300 years before today with the current conditions, in order to create new forms and new forms and new expressional languages.The simplicity created by the silky matt surface, was combined with modern forms, and strong expressions were established with less materials.
Terra Sigillata, the golden slip of the ancient Greek period and Roman period, became the slip people wanted to learn again, to apply and whose value was understood better nowadays.
