In this thesis titled as “Investigation of Exercises in Turkish as a Foreign Language Textbooks: Level A1-A2”, exercises constituting a significant part of textbooks and workbooks are investigated. The learning content prepared in accordance with the achievements determined in the curricula is tried to be given to the students through the exercises in the textbooks. In fact, the exercises are related to the content of the textbooks and the language skills which are emphasized, and they reflect what to be taught in the textbook. For this purpose, primarily literature review was conducted in the context of the exercises in the field of foreign language teaching and the theoretical framework of the study was formed. Data were gathered through document analysis from the basic level (A1-A2) of the teaching sets of “Istanbul Turkish for Foreigners”, “Yedi İklim Turkish”, “Gazi Turkish for Foreigners”, “Yeni Hitit Turkish for Foreigners” textbooks and workbooks that constitute the data resource. Content analysis of collected data; exercises in the unit designs, exercise instructions, exercise articles, exercise designs, studying styles, number of exercises, distribution of exercises according to skill areas and types of exercises used according to skill areas investigated through induction, data obtained was shown in numerical terms by using tables and graphs and they were evaluated in the light of theoretical information. In the textbooks of which research results investigated demonstrated that there are problems in terms of writing of exercise instructions, exercise designs, articles, distribution of exercises according to the language skills and types of exercises used. Considering the importance and contribution of Turkish as a foreign language in the process of learning, incorporating exercises into the design process of textbooks will increase the effectiveness of the learning-teaching process.
