Abstract
Shadow is an image that occurs when light is blocked by non-transparent objects. As the twin image of its source, shadow completely owes its existence to the light and is an optical matter in terms of its relation to the light. It represents the areas on the object that light does not reach. With light, shadow reveals a three-dimensional structure of the object. It is a required element in painting to create a three-dimensional illusion of the objects. Shadow is an indicator of its source object and taking the form of its source object, it embodies the object on the surface it falls. Therefore, an indispensable relationship occurs between the shadow and its source object. If there is a shadow, there must be its source material. Because shadow is a proof of the existence of its source object and it proves the earthly reality of its origin. In this sense, shadow plays a significant role in the problem of existence. The duality between the shadow and its source material is similar to negative-positive dialectics. Just as a positive image cannot be complete without its negative counterpart; remaining a missing pattern, the source material cannot be complete without its shadow. In this thesis, entitled "Shadow Practices in the Context of Being and Form" the mysterious image, which suddenly appears and disappears on the surface it falls, is studied through an ontological perspective and it is examined within the context of its formation process in art. In this process), not only the optical but also symbolic and metaphoric meanings of shadow in art are addressed. In addition to the theoretical approach in this study, a series of practices were performed by establishing a dialogue with the adventure of shadow in art history.
