Abstract
Stuttering is one of the common speech disorders observed in children. Therefore, the assessment and diagnosis of the stuttering has been a focus of interest for the researchers during many years. The aim of this study was to adapt the Test of Childhood Stuttering (TOCS) into Turkish language with testing the validity and reliability of the adaptation. The study included 100 children of boys and girls aged between 4 years and 12 years and 11 months aged. The participants were separated into two groups: 50 children with stuttering and 50 children with normal fluency without any language and speech disorders. After the translation of TOCS’s into Turkish language, translation realized via the means of intercultural guideline recommended by the International Quality of Life Assessment Project (IQOLA), 20 children with normal fluency were assessed within the scope of the pilot study. As a result of the assessment, some of the TOCS application book pictures were replaced with suitable ones for Turkish culture. The content (pilot study and expert opinions), structure (test performance of participants, comparison of end groups, modality test score correlation, factor analysis and internal consistency) and criterion validity (TOCS-TR ve (Stuttering Severity Insturument-4-TR) SSI-4-TR correlation) were analyzed for the validity of the test adaptation. The internal consistency (Cronbach Alpha coefficient), consistency (total number of 12 individuals, 7 are stuttering and 5 with normally fluently, were test- and retested within 7-10 days for correlation) and equivalence (interrater reliability) were analyzed for the reliability of the test adaptation. When the results of the study were examined; the Turkish adaptation of TOCS (TOCS-TR) observed as reliable and valid. TOCS-TR will be useful to the assessment of the severity of stuttering children and differentiating and determining of their characteristics.
