The present study focuses on the reflections on the narrative identity construction in Bernhard Schlink's work 'The Reader' and analyzes the life story of the protagonist and first-person narrator Michael Berg from this perspective. In the current social structure, the indicators and the basic conditions of a healthy identity formation are dwindling. Therefore, the process of identity formation is seen as a problematic area in the contemporary society. The identity problem is presented based on the literary text to point out the forms of identity's realization and how the methods of the identiy(s) are constructed. It is particularly noteworthy how these constructive aspects develop in the story and how the author creates the fictional characters to reflect the narrative in the story. In the consideration of this aspect, the approach concerning the 'narrative identity' and its construction on the basic basis is examined. This procedure is intended to indicate that the formation of identity is explicated as a real problem in the late modern era and that individuals are looking for new ways of constructing the identity. The conception and the aspect of the narrative identity is one of these construction methods in which subjects depict their identity in narrative and procedural terms in stories. The properties of narrativity are utilized in the analysis of the selected text corpus afterwords in order to emphasize that this form of construction is also used in the design of literary texts and visualizes the image of the characters present in the text.
