Abstract
The relationship between mother and child forms the basis of child development and this relationship can be affected by many different variables. Today, the prevalence of technology and social media is increasing. The mother-child relationship can also be influenced by technology and social media. In this context, this research aimed to examine the mother-child relationship with the use of technology and social media by mothers of 5-6 year old children. The study group consists of 401 mothers of 5-6-year-old children attending public and private kindergartens affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the provinces of Ankara, Mamak, Yenimahalle and Çankaya. Data collection was provided with the Personal Information Form created by the researcher and the Parent-Child Relationship scale, the validity and reliability study of which was carried out. The data were analyzed by means of a statistical package program, and independent groups t-test and one-way analysis of variance ANOVA analysis were used to examine whether the scores obtained from the closeness and conflict sub-dimensions of the scale differ statistically according to the categories of independent variables. In case the score distributions of the closeness and conflict sub-dimensions were not normal, the unrelated samples Mann Whitney U test was used if the number of categories was two, and the Kruskall Wallis test was used if the number of categories was more than two. According to the research findings, as the mother's education level increases, she experiences less conflict in her relationship with her child, as the number of children the mother has, more conflicts with her child, as the mother and child's screen time increases, the mother-child conflict also increases, and technology and social media affect the mother-child relationship.
