Abstract
AKDOĞAN, Ozan. Historical Development of Movie Title Sequences Design with Technology and a Practical Implementation of Title Sequences. Master’s Thesis, Ankara, 2018. Towards the end of 1950s, there has been an increase in the number of Hollywood movies and bigger production teams were started to be employed in shooting movies. The ever-increasing production team population became responsible for title sequences and resulted in prolongation of screen time of title sequences in movies. This paved the way for more harmony between graphic design and typography which started to receive more and more attention. All these positive developments made title sequences an integral part of cinema. The increasing importance of credits in proportion to advancing technology has been an important consideration in choosing it as a thesis topic. Firstly, this research briefly touches upon history of cinema and research was conducted over Saul Bass who is one of the most prominent producer of title sequences. The research analyzed two significant periods before and after Saul Bass and laid emphasis on advancing technology over the years. Image, typography, color and pattern uses as elements of graphic design in title sequences were analyzed with examples. Based on all these analyses, title sequences designs were examined in terms of techniques used and their places in the movies. The title sequences chosen according to years were analyzed and a practical implementation at the end of the research was aimed.
