Abstract
Light and shadow have been used as the primal means to represent emotions, senses and thoughts since the ancient times and they have attained one of their utmost functions today through projection mapping technique, which has become very influential in the fields of advertisement and entertainment as well as art. Projection mapping, as one of the recent techniques of screening videos, is used to transform every dynamic surface into a screen and employed in relatively few areas. However, increasing or improving its adoption in developing innovative products in terms of creativity and authenticity, particularly in art, will give a new direction to art. Within this framework of thought, this study aims to promote the usage of projection mapping technique with its simplest form in the field of art. That is, by making use of a technique, which has the optimal cost and the highest feasibility rate, it aims to present an experimental method to install emotion, sense and thought into an inanimate object or artwork. In the first chapter of this thesis, the history of projection mapping from ancient to contemporary times is presented, projection mapping is discussed and Turkish artists in this field are introduced. In the second chapter, the necessary infrastructure for and the application methods of projection mapping tecnique are discussed. In the third chapter, in order to show the pervasive usage of projection mapping technique, certain examples within the field are provided. In the fourth chapter, the three uses of this technique, firstly understanding the practical techniques, secondly adopting one of its feasible usages and lastly its possible employments in art, are analysed with an experimental approach. As a result of this analysis in this chapter, the technical problems, their solutions and the visual adjustment of the projection mapping technique are assessed. Thus, the thesis reveals the significance of projection mapping technique in expression and to what extent it may be used in art with an experimental method.
