The use of authentic texts in foreign language teaching has been an important issue in recent years. However, it is not easy to work with authentic texts for beginner and intermediate learners as it requires a certain level of linguistic knowledge to benefit from the diversity of authentic texts. In this respect, it is essential to bring the stories into use by modifying them within the framework of specific criteria and making them easier to comprehend for beginner, pre-intermediate and intermediate language levels. To that end, six short stories were modified using text modification stages and criteria, adapted in the study, to work with A1, A2 and B1 level students. The modification process was based on the vocabulary and the grammatical structures covered in Yeni Hitit course book, which was prepared in accordance with the descriptors in the European Language Portfolio. For lexical substitution, Turkish National Corpus and Word Frequency Dictionary for Written Turkish were benefited from, as well. Linguistic data of the modified texts such as the number of words, the number of sentences, average word length, and average sentence length were determined once the texts were organized after analysis, transformation and regeneration stages, and by using these data, readability levels of the texts were evaluated. Quantitative data obtained through the readability formulas were supported by a questionnaire designed to measure the linguistic adequacy of the modified texts. The results of the questionnaire also provided data regarding linguistic features and textuality of the modified texts and the glossary included.
