Abstract
The aim of this study is to compare the effects of acute aerobic exercise on glucose, insulin, irisin and lipasin responses following short term alkaline and acidic dietary interventions in obese males with insulin resistance (OB-IR). Eleven OB-IR men (age: 34.63±4.12 years, body mass index: 35.68±4.38 kg/m2) participated in the study. Participants’ health status was screened, body composition was determined by dual X-ray absorbtiometry, resting metabolic rate and maximum oxygen consumption were determined by indirect calorimetry method. Three different isocaloric diets (control, acidic, alkaline) were administered to the participants for 7 days in a random cross-over design, with a two-day washout between them. On the eighth day after each diet intervention, acute aerobic exercise (36 minutes at 65% of maximal heart rate (HR) on the treadmill) was performed. Glucose, insulin, irisin and lipasin levels were determined pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise and after 1-hour recovery. Friedman variance analysis was used to determine the differences between dietary interventions. No significant change was observed in irisin or lipasin levels with exercise or diet (p>0.05). Pre-exercise insulin was lower in alkaline diet than other two conditions (p<0.05). Glucose response to exercise was similar in all diet conditions (p>0.05), lower immediately post-exercise and after 1-hour recovery compared to pre-exercise (p<0.05). In addition, the participants' running speed in the alkaline diet was higher than the acidic condition to attain the same HR (p<0.05). The effects of acidic and alkaline diets on irisin, lipasin and glucose metabolism at rest and in response to exercise were similar, while, achieving higher speeds at the same HR after the alkaline diet suggests that alkaline diet improves exercise performance in OB-IR men.
